In 1926, some fourteen years after the Titanic disaster members of the Stead family, his friends and members of the Literary and Historical Society of the Presbyterian Church of England erected a memorial tablet in memory of William T Stead at his birthplace in the small village of Embleton in Northumberland.  The memorial makes no mention of the Titanic disaster, but recalls his journalistic career and other endeavours.

The memorial is affixed to the gable end wall of the Old Manse, his birthplace, and is clearly visible from the footpath.  The memorial carries the following inscription:

William Thomas Stead 1849 - 1912 World renowned journalist and apostle of peace was born here July 5th. 1849
