Nichols family grave (Arthur Nichols memorial)

Arthur Nichols signed on as a steward aboard the Titanic in Southampton. He lost his life in the disaster. The body of Arthur Nichols, if recovered, was not identified. Although his body was not recovered Arthur is remembered on his family grave in Nunhead Cemetery.

Much of the cemetery is overgrown and over the years many graves have been vandalised or lost. Perhaps the Nichols headstone has survived because it is in an overgrown part of the cemetery. The headstone is just east of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission grave.

Arthur Nichols Lost his life on the "Titanic" April 15th 1912, aged 46.

The family headstone also commemorates the following family members in chronological order: listed first is Arthur's older brother Frederick George who died in 1899 aged 35, his father George who died in 1909 aged 76, John Milton who also died in 1912 aged 48, his mother Louisa who died in 1926 aged 86, Harriet Milton who died in 1933 aged 71 and his younger sister Jessie Agnes, who died in 1937 aged 61.
