Godalming Grammar School Jack Phillips portrait
John "Jack" George Phillips was the chief wireless operator aboard the Titanic, working alongside junior wireless operator Harold Bride. Jack Phillips lost his life in the disaster. His body if recovered, was not identified. Although his body was not recovered Jack is remembered by many memorials, including a memorial portrait currently displayed in Godalming Museum.
The portrait, a painting of Jack Phillips from a photograph by local resident Jennie Stedman is set within a gold-painted wooden frame. The portrait was commissioned by present and former pupils of Godalming Grammar School and hung in the school before it was subsequently transferred to the collection held at Godalming Museum.
The portrait shows Jack Phillips in his Marconi Wireless Company uniform, with the company badge on his cap and wireless officer insignia on his sleeves. The frame bares the following dedication:
Jack Phillips. Wireless operator on "The Titanic" 1912 From past and present scholars of the Godalming Grammar School.
