W T Stead Northern Echo tablet
Following a four day conference organised by the W T Stead International Memorial Society a memorial tablet in memory of William Stead was unveiled by local dignitaries and members of the society, in the presence of three of William Stead's grandchildren.
The tablet recognises his career as a journalist and his campaigning spirit for women's rights and world peace. The tablet bares the following inscription:
W. T. Stead Editor of The Northern Echo 1871 - 1880 Reforming journalist, champion of women and crusader for world peace.
The plaque makes no mention of his death in the Titanic disaster.
